I have some dumb questions
If starting from a saturated color, what’s the best way to get a desaturated one? Add umber? Add complimentary color? Add black?
Going through your videos, trial and error, losing fears and experimentation seem to be the best way, but you may have a trick. I’m trying to get away from exactly what you talk about….that “toy” look. But it ends up washed out (too much white). Is the solution to mix my own desaturated base color and then if it’s too washed out/white, glaze the desaturated base color over it? I have stuff on IG otherwise I’d post a picture here. I feel like I’m so close to capturing it, but not there yet. I appreciate your help (and the videos)

Hi James!
To desaturate a color you can add the complwmwntary of it on the mix. Only a bit. But this tends to a brown/ black tone.
Another way is adding grey to the saturated color. You will obtain a more “pastel” color. Theres not a best way, just experiment 😉
I will not suggest giving a wash of this “new desaturated mix” to solve a previous layer. I will start again with the tone you want.
Also, a good way to get your highlights avoiding pure white is using variations of it, mixing white and yellow, or white and orange. Is difficult to say if I don’t know the color scheme. Lets talk on instagram if you like. 😉 cheers man!

I really need to experiment and just let go (while planning better, I’m trying to mix stuff up on the pallet to pick a color rather than just grabbing what looks cool). There isn’t an easy way to do this unfortunately. I just got to “lose my fears.” Lol, for real. No guts no glory. Thanks.
Ps I bought the color book you suggested. It’s just what I needed
